Scandinavian style: when well-being moves into our homes

What is the Scandinavian style? “Hygge” for the Danes (a cocooning moment that brings well-being and confidence), “Lagom” (the Swedish principle of “just the right amount”), or “Koselig” for the Norwegians (a term evoking peace and comfort, the equivalent of our “cozy”); while these words might ring a bell, it is sometimes tricky to define them precisely. What do they have in common? A certain idea of well-being that comes straight from the Nordic countries. A philosophy of life that infuses even the style of interiors, where simplicity, functionality, and warm materials dominate, helping to create a home where it feels good to curl up (essential in countries where winters are long and daylight is particularly limited!). To bring a little bit of this Scandinavian spirit into your home, follow the guide.

Where does the Scandinavian style come from?

To understand the spirit of Scandinavian style, you must understand the environment in which its inhabitants live: due to vast wooded areas, Scandinavian homes are often surrounded by forests, which de facto provide the main construction material (hence the abundance of wood in this Scandinavian decor style). The harshness of the climate, meanwhile, invites the layering of warm and soft materials, which warm up both the atmosphere and the body. Throws, cushions placed directly on the floor, and thick knits are layered for an atmosphere that is as comfortable as can be. The low amount of sunlight also encourages Scandinavians to seek light everywhere: large openings, white walls to brighten rooms, and a profusion of lamps and candles; everything is good for bringing in a bit of clarity. Wood, light, comfortable materials: there you have the essence of Scandinavian style. But in practice, how does it work? Rest assured, if the Scandinavian style is so popular, it is also because with a few tips, it is relatively easy to install at home.

How to create a Scandinavian decor?

Whether it's furniture, accessories, or wall decor, the Scandinavian style can be summed up in 3 words: simplicity, functionality, and authenticity. This decor style is indeed designed to give an impression of breathing space: out with heavy furniture, cluttered rooms, and dark colors—we want lightness!

In terms of furniture, the Scandinavian interior aims to be both minimalist and warm. The shapes are simple and clean: we favor furniture with light legs and open silhouettes that let light pass through, such as glass coffee tables, chairs with compass legs, and the famous nesting tables. Combining the useful with the pleasant, the Scandinavian interior is above all practical and functional. The ideal? Furniture with a retro design paired with good storage capacity: Scandinavian sideboards and credenzas, coffee tables with drawers—all means are good for preventing clutter from setting in. Since a warm atmosphere is also a must-have, do not skimp on cozy armchairs, footrests and chunky knit poufs, as well as fabric sofas with curved backs (with wooden legs, of course). Your entire interior should invite you to cocoon.

As for accessories, here again, sobriety prevails, but one can still allow for a few key pieces such as the timeless wave vase by Finnish designer Alvar Aalto or the iconic Panthella lamp by Danish designer Louis Poulsen. Beyond these few objects, accessories will be more textile-oriented: throws tossed right onto the bed or sofa, chevron-print cushions, very soft rugs (in faux fur or semi-long pile—guaranteed cozy effect), and light sheer curtains (always to let in the light). Objective: that you and your guests almost feel like walking around barefoot... To finalize your Scandinavian space, opt for a mix of paintings and posters illustrating inspiring messages, geometric blocks, or nature motifs, and you’re done!

And color-wise, what does that give? Still in the search for light and warmth, the colors to favor for a Scandinavian decor are:

  • White—the queen color—to be applied to walls to streamline and visually enlarge the space, within furniture, or on the floor with a choice of painted parquet, for example.
  • Beige/cream shades, which have the advantage of white while having the merit of warming up the atmosphere.
  • Shades of gray (the gray sofa is often a prerequisite in Scandinavian design).
  • Pastel tones: sea green, powder pink, straw yellow... make room for softness on any occasion!
While the dominant colors are light, nothing prevents you from adding a bit of fantasy and originality with one section of wall or a few colored accessories to create contrast. The main thing in decor remains, above all, to have fun...
